Bloomberg Automates Japanese Government Bond Market-on-Close Trading
Bloomberg completed the first fully automated JGB Market-on-Close trade, streamlining a key reference-rate workflow for Japanese fixed income.
Bloomberg Electronic Markets executed the first fully automated Japanese Government Bond Market-on-Close trade in Tokyo, the company announced Oct. 4, 2026, marking a significant operational shift in how institutional participants interact with one of the world's largest sovereign debt markets.
The new automated workflow aligns with BB3P, known in the market as Hikene Trading, which serves as the Market-on-Close reference rate for Japanese government bonds. By removing manual intervention from the process, Bloomberg aims to reduce execution risk and improve consistency for traders relying on that benchmark at the close of each session.

Japanese government bonds represent a cornerstone of global fixed income markets, and any efficiency gain in their settlement and pricing infrastructure carries broad implications for asset managers, banks, and pension funds that use JGB benchmarks to value portfolios and manage interest-rate exposure. Automating the Market-on-Close function is widely seen as a natural extension of the electronic trading modernization that has reshaped equity and foreign exchange markets over the past decade.
The announcement positions Bloomberg Electronic Markets as an early mover in applying automation to JGB close-of-day workflows, a segment that had historically relied on manual coordination between counterparties. Whether competing venues move to adopt similar automated pipelines in the near term remains to be seen, but the milestone signals growing institutional appetite for streamlined fixed income infrastructure in Japan.
